Red Feelpaye Vaziri Runner
This red Feelpaye Vaziri runner is a hand double knotted runner from Afghanistan, made in lamb’s wool and measuring 252 x 91 cm. A camel-brown field carries two columns of medallions in red, blue, ivory, orange and maroon, framed by a tan border of small cross motifs. It covers about 2.3 square metres.
The design of this red Feelpaye Vaziri runner
Two columns of upright medallions run the length of the field. Each medallion is built from layered lobes with a small motif at its centre, and the colours change from one medallion to the next, so no two sit exactly alike. A small red diamond sits in the ground between the rows, along the centre of the field. Ivory and orange medallions sit beside the blue and red ones, so the two columns vary from top to bottom rather than repeating a single colour.
The border of this red Feelpaye Vaziri runner is the calmer frame. Its tan band carries small cross and X motifs in red, cream and blue, and a narrow pale stripe sits between it and the field. A multicoloured tassel fringe finishes the ends. Fine dark lines separate each medallion from the brown ground, so every motif stands out.
Afghan rugs and how they are made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. They more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs and a heavier, more relaxed feel than many rugs from Iran, which often have curving floral and medallion designs. The cross motifs and upright medallions on this runner belong to that geometric side of the tradition. The layout of medallions in two columns suits a long, narrow floor.
Sizing it for your room
At 252 x 91 cm this red Feelpaye Vaziri runner covers about 2.3 square metres. A hallway about 111 to 131 cm wide leaves roughly 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side of it. The length suits a shorter hall or the space beside a bed, rather than a long corridor.
The camel-brown field works with timber floors and warm neutral walls, and the red medallions pick up red cushions or a red sofa. The medallions are the strongest colour on the field, so the runner suits a plain hallway where they can be seen from the front door.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
A runner in a hallway takes foot traffic along its whole length, so vacuum the full length of this red Feelpaye Vaziri runner, not just the centre.
