Red Esfahan Tejari Rug
This red Esfahan Tejari rug has a wool pile and measures 385 x 300 cm, or about 11.6 square metres. A red field is centred on a slate blue medallion with a cream and rust heart, and a pale blue inner border and a wide navy outer border frame it.
The design up close
This red Esfahan Tejari rug has a lobed star medallion in slate blue and grey, with cream and gold petals and a small rust centre. Pale blue shapes at its sides link it to the corners, and the medallion stands out from the red.
The red field is covered in small flowers, vines and leaves in cream, gold, slate blue and green. The density is even, so the ground reads as a soft texture from across the room and as clear flowers up close. For anyone comparing handmade traditional rugs, look at how evenly the flowers are spaced.
The frame has three layers: a narrow cream guard band, a slate blue inner border with pale scrolls, and a wide navy outer border packed with cream and gold flowers. Pale spandrels sit in the corners of the field and echo the medallion.
On this red Esfahan Tejari rug, the outer petals of the medallion are pale blue grey and pointed, while the inner petals are cream, so the star seems to open out from its centre in layers.
The pale blue inner border runs as a thin, even line all the way round the field, and it picks up the same pale blue grey as the outer petals of the medallion.
Colour and where it sits
The red covers most of this red Esfahan Tejari rug, with slate blue and navy in the medallion and borders. Cream and gold appear in the flower heads across the field and in the outer border, where they lighten the navy. Among our handmade traditional rugs, this red piece has a clear split between warm field and cool frame.
Sizing a red Esfahan Tejari rug for your room
At 385 x 300 cm the rug covers about 11.6 square metres. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m sits along its length with roughly 82.5 cm of rug showing past each end. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm (eight seats) leaves 72.5 cm of rug at each end and 100 cm along each long side, so chairs can be pulled out and stay on the rug.
The red suits warm timber floors and cream or grey walls, and the navy border gives the room a dark edge.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
