Red Botanical Tabriz Rug
This red botanical Tabriz rug is a Persian rug, hand knotted in Iran from lamb wool, and it measures 300 x 196 cm. A deep red field holds a central medallion and a scatter of small flowers, framed by a navy border, so the red botanical Tabriz rug has a warm and traditional centre.
The design up close
The central medallion is navy-edged and filled with ivory, with a red diamond at its heart and gold scrolls at its outer points. Pendants of the same shape hang above and below it, and ivory corner pieces with green, gold and red-brown flowers fill the four corners. The red botanical Tabriz rug is worked with a dense scatter of small sprigs and tiny flowers in cream, navy, green and gold across the red ground.
The navy border is broad, with cream, pink and yellow floral scrolls, and beige and gold guard stripes separate it from the field. The medallion stays sharp and easy to read from across the room, while the sprigs give the red ground its texture. The sprigs are not all the same size, which keeps the field lively.
Tabriz and the botanical design
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries, and its workshops are known for fine knotting and designs that range from classic central medallions to all-over floral patterns. Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot since the mid 19th century, often with a small hooked knife, which gives a firm, even surface. This red botanical Tabriz rug follows that classic layout, with a medallion at the centre and botanical detail filling the field. Tabriz workshops work in a wide range of styles, so the botanical layout here is one of many.
How this red botanical Tabriz rug is made
Every knot was tied by hand, and the pile is lamb wool. Our records note German dyes. The small sprigs across the red field are worked as separate, clear motifs, and the edges of the medallion stay sharp.
Sizing it for your room
At 300 x 196 cm the red botanical Tabriz rug covers about 5.9 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 40 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 60 cm at each end and 53 cm along each side. Deep red suits cream walls, timber floors and navy or ivory furnishings. Its size makes it a good choice for a larger living room where the rug can sit under a full seating group.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
