Red Bakhtiar Paradise Rug
This red Bakhtiar Paradise rug was double hand knotted in Iran from wool and measures 375 x 305 cm, which is about 11.4 square metres. Its rust red border frames a grid of compartments, and each one holds a small scene of flowers, a vase or a stylised plant in red, navy, cream and pink.

The compartments form a grid of about seven columns and nine rows. They alternate between rust red, navy and cream grounds, and the motifs vary from one square to the next. Some hold a tall vase with flowers, others a stylised tree, a rosette or a pair of stems. The mix gives the field its lively, mosaic look.
The border is wide and rust red, with a cream and navy vine scroll that carries palmette and paisley shapes. Narrow guard stripes in navy and cream separate it from the field, and an outer navy band finishes the edge.
Persian rugs and where they are made
Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months. This rug is made from wool.
Persian rug and Persian carpet mean the same thing, so a bakhtiar rug from Iran is a Persian rug in every sense.
How it is made
Each knot in this red Bakhtiar Paradise rug is tied by hand, and the pile is double hand knotted. The compartments are built up row by row, so each motif is placed by the weaver. A piece this size can take many months to finish.
Our records note traditionally dyed wool. The reds, navy and cream sit side by side without blending, and the rust border gives this red bakhtiar paradise rug its warmth from one edge to the other.
Sizing it for your room
At 375 x 305 cm, this red Bakhtiar Paradise rug covers about 11.4 square metres. Under a 2.2 m three-seat sofa it leaves about 78 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa and two armchairs can sit on it around a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of 240 x 100 cm for eight leaves roughly 68 cm at each end and 103 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back. A table of 180 x 90 cm for six leaves about 98 cm at each end and 108 cm along each side. Red and cream suit warm timber floors and neutral walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
