Pink Abstract Rug
This pink abstract rug is a contemporary wool piece measuring 397 x 302 cm, about 12.0 square metres. Pink and red patches sit among mustard, grey-green and cream on a taupe ground, so the colour reads as a mixed, painted surface rather than a single shade of pink.
The design of this pink abstract rug
The upper third carries the strongest colour. Red and pink patches spread across it, with mustard and ochre patches beside them and a few mauve smudges between. Along the top right, the edge is picked out in blue and navy flecks. The middle of the rug is a broad grey-green ground, scattered with cream and white marks and a few pale yellow smudges that look like paint.
Lower down, a red and pink patch sits at the left edge, and a cluster of navy and royal blue flecks gathers near the centre of the bottom third. A small gold patch appears in the bottom right corner. The cream marks have soft, feathered edges, while the red patches meet the grey in harder, more broken lines.
There is no border, no repeat and no motif. The patches run across the whole field, and the lighter ground shows through in places, so every part of the rug looks different from the next. Nothing on the surface is laid out to be read in a fixed order, which is the point of an abstract rug.
Why an abstract design suits a room
This abstract rug has no top or bottom and no pattern that must line up with a wall or furniture, so it works from any side of the room. The pinks and reds pick up warm tones in cushions, art or timber, while the grey-green and taupe ground keeps the rug calm enough for a living room. Because the colours are spread across the field rather than gathered in one place, a pink abstract rug like this one sits well with several colours already in the room.
This pink abstract rug also works on a bare floor, where the patches stand out against plain boards. On a timber floor the grey and taupe ground blends with the boards, so the pink and mustard marks become the focus.
Sizing it for your room
At 397 x 302 cm the rug covers about 12.0 square metres. Under a sofa of around 2.2 m, about 88 cm of rug shows past each end, so a full lounge setting fits on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug shows roughly 78 cm at each end and 101 cm along each side.
For a table of about 180 x 90 cm with six chairs, the margins grow to about 108 cm at each end and 106 cm along each side. The ground colours suit pale timber, white walls and simple grey or cream furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
