Pearl White Nain Persian Rug
This pearl white Nain Persian rug was double hand knotted in Iran from lamb’s wool and measures 318 x 206 cm, which is about 6.6 square metres. Its palette is light and calm: a cream field, a border in soft beige and grey, and fine drawing in navy and dusty blue. Our records note vegetable dyes, so the colours are gentle and sit close together.
The design up close
The pearl white Nain Persian rug centres on a tall oval field outlined in fine vines and scrolling stems. Small blossoms in navy, slate blue, grey and beige climb along those stems and spread across the cream ground. At the heart of the oval sits a round medallion in pale blue and grey, built from rings of small rosettes that step outwards toward the edge. Smaller pendant motifs in blue hang above and below it.
Along the sides of the oval, small navy diamonds break up the vines. Beyond the field, a guard stripe separates the pattern from a wide border in beige and grey. That border repeats stylised flowers and rosettes on a taupe band, and its corners carry flowers in beige and pale blue, so the border turns cleanly at each end.
Because the cream ground and the blue-grey drawing sit close in tone, the rug reads as soft texture from across the room and as clear flowers when you stand over it.
Iran and the Persian rug tradition
Every Persian rug in our collection is hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months.
How a pearl white Nain Persian rug is made
This rug was double hand knotted, so each knot was tied by hand on the loom and the pile was then trimmed level. On a hand-knotted rug the design shows on the back too, with small irregularities that only hand knotting leaves. The pile is lamb’s wool, which gives it a soft hand.
Sizing it for your room
At 318 x 206 cm the rug covers about 6.6 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits on it with about 49 cm of rug showing past each end, so the coffee table and armchairs can sit within the field. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 69 cm of rug at each end and 58 cm along each side, enough room for the chairs to slide back. A pearl white Nain Persian rug in this size suits pale timber, white walls and blue or grey furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath this pearl white Nain Persian rug. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
Pale wool shows marks sooner, so deal with spills on this pearl white Nain Persian rug straight away.
