Olive Ziegler Afghan Rug
This olive Ziegler Afghan rug is double hand knotted in Afghanistan from lamb’s wool, with vegetable dyes, and measures 298 x 210 cm. Its field is a soft grey-taupe, scattered with red, coral and pale blue flowers and framed by a broad cream border. The palette is quiet, so the flowers stand out without overpowering a room.
The design up close
Across this olive Ziegler Afghan rug, fine vines carry small flowers in loose rows. Two vertical columns of stylised blossoms run down the centre, one rising from the upper middle and one sitting below the middle, with a pair of rust red rosettes set between them. Smaller coral and pale blue flowers fill the gaps, so the field reads as an even scatter of flowers with no single large medallion.
The border of this olive Ziegler Afghan rug does most of the work at the edges. A wide cream band carries large palmette and flower motifs in coral, rust and pale blue, with a narrow tan stripe between it and the grey field. The outer edge repeats the flowers at a smaller scale, and a narrow darker edge frames the whole rug. Seen from the sofa, the cream border pulls the grey field together.
Afghan weaving behind the design
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and many of its rugs carry bold geometric and tribal designs with a heavier, more relaxed feel. This olive Ziegler Afghan rug takes a flowered, all-over route instead, which suits a room where you want pattern without strong contrast. Some Afghan rugs use hand-spun wool and natural dyes, and a room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months. The patterned field also helps hide everyday wear, so this rug suits family rooms, entrances and dining rooms.
How this olive Ziegler Afghan rug is made
This rug is double hand knotted, so each tuft is tied by hand on the loom, row after row, and the pile is then sheared level. Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that only hand tying leaves. Our records note vegetable dyes, and the lamb’s wool gives the pile a soft hand.
Sizing it for your room
At 298 x 210 cm, this olive Ziegler Afghan rug covers about 6.3 square metres. Its length suits a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m. Centred under the sofa, the rug runs about 39 cm past each end, so the whole sofa sits on it. The 210 cm width leaves room for a coffee table in front of the sofa, with the pattern still visible at each side of it.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
