Mint Green Kashan Rug
This mint green Kashan rug is hand-knotted in Iran from lamb’s wool on a cotton foundation, and it measures 350 x 225 cm, or about 7.9 square metres. The field is a soft grey green, with a blue medallion at the centre and a close spread of flowers and vines across the whole ground. It is a traditional rug in a calm palette, so it suits many different rooms.
The design up close
The medallion in this mint green Kashan rug is worked in blue, with lighter blue and cream at its heart and a ring of pale yellow petals around its edge. From it, stems and small blossoms spread across the whole field in navy, cream, slate and touches of rust, so the ground reads as one continuous pattern. Nothing is left empty. Even the spaces between the medallion and the border are filled with tiny flowers.
The border is a band of navy and cream with a fine scroll that repeats along each side. A narrow inner stripe frames the field and keeps the grey green ground from running out to the edges. Look closely and the flowers are not all drawn alike, so the pattern has the slightly irregular feel of a piece knotted by hand. Yellow and rust blossoms are scattered through the vines, adding small points of warmth to the cool palette.
Where this mint green Kashan rug suits a room
The pale green ground is light enough to sit on timber, pale stone or light carpet without weighing a room down. Blue and cream furniture draws out the blue in the medallion, while a grey sofa lets the navy border stand out. Small yellow and rust flowers in the field pick up warm cushions or a timber side table. Because the palette is muted, this mint green Kashan rug sits calmly in a dining room as well as a lounge.
How it is made
Every knot in this mint green Kashan rug is tied by hand. The weaver ties the knots on a loom, row after row, then trims the pile to an even height so the small flowers and the medallion stand clear of the ground. Lamb’s wool stays soft underfoot, and the cotton foundation keeps the rug flat and stable on the floor.
Sizing it for your room
At 350 x 225 cm, this mint green Kashan rug covers about 7.9 square metres. In a lounge room, a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 65 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, the rug leaves roughly 85 cm at each end and about 68 cm along each side, enough room for the chairs to slide back.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
