Medallion Abshari Rug
This medallion Abshari rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan from fine wool and measures 242 x 169 cm. Its pale grey ground carries a large teal medallion at the centre, framed by navy and cream borders. The rug covers about 4.1 square metres.
The design of this medallion Abshari rug up close
A large octagon sits in the centre, in teal and green with a rose and orange rosette at its middle. The octagon has a teal ring around its edge. Small cream and pink triangles and diamonds fill the grey ground around it, and four dark teal squares, each with pink flowers, sit at the corners of the central panel. The grey ground around the medallion is the widest open area, so the medallion stands out from the field.
Rows of short orange pendants stand near the top and bottom ends of the rug. The wide navy border carries a cream key pattern in bands, with a narrow cream line on the outside edge.
The navy border is the darkest part of the rug, so it frames the grey field well. Across the rug, the border is busier than the centre, and the pale ground keeps the medallion easy to pick out.
Afghanistan and its weaving
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. A room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months. Their thick wool and patterned fields hide everyday wear, so Afghan rugs suit family rooms, entrances, hallways and dining rooms. This medallion Abshari rug follows that tradition with its geometric medallion and repeated border motifs. Our Afghan collection ranges from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces.
How this medallion Abshari rug is made
This medallion Abshari rug is hand knotted from fine wool by Afghan artisans, one knot at a time on a loom. Our records note vegetable dyes for this rug.
Sizing it for your room
At 242 x 169 cm, this medallion Abshari rug is about 2.4 m long, which suits a lounge. The front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves roughly 31 cm of rug at each end and about 40 cm along each side. The pale grey ground sits well with light walls. Its length of about 2.4 m suits a lounge, and the pale ground brightens a room with dark furniture. A pale ground shows marks sooner than a dark one, so deal with spills straight away.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
