Magic Blue Khorjin Rug
This magic blue Khorjin rug was hand double knotted in Afghanistan from wool and measures 308 x 207 cm, which is about 6.4 square metres. A broad blue ground carries bands of red, rust and cream, each filled with small geometric motifs. Our records note vegetable dyes, and the colours sit side by side so the rug feels lively from across a room.
The design up close
The field is laid out in horizontal stripes. Wide blue bands alternate with narrower bands of red and rust, and the blue ground is spotted with rows of small diamond and cross-shaped rosettes in red, cream, rust and orange. The magic blue Khorjin rug keeps the same spacing from top to bottom, so the stripes repeat evenly down its length.
The red bands are the busiest. Each carries a row of stepped diamond medallions outlined in cream and blue, with small hooked motifs and touches of orange between them. Narrow guard stripes in orange and cream separate the bands, and the fine lines keep the edge of each motif crisp.
Where a magic blue Khorjin rug comes from
Khorjin rugs take their name from the Khorjin, the woven saddlebag of the region. A Khorjin is a pair of woven bags joined together and carried over a horse or donkey, traditionally decorated with geometric patterns. Today’s Khorjin rugs take that look across the whole field, and traditional pieces use reds, blues and ivory, the palette this rug follows. Our Khorjin rugs are hand knotted in Afghanistan.
How the knots and wool hold up
Turn a magic blue Khorjin rug over and the design should show clearly on the back, with slight irregularities from tying each knot by hand. Wool of this kind is thick and hard-wearing, which suits a rug that takes daily use in a family room or hallway.
Sizing it for your room
At 308 x 207 cm this rug covers about 6.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m sits on it with about 44 cm of rug past each end, so a sofa and coffee table sit comfortably on the field. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm leaves roughly 64 cm of rug at each end and 59 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back. A magic blue Khorjin rug in this size suits rooms with pale walls and timber floors.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath the magic blue Khorjin rug. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
