Grey Minimalist Kilim Rug
This grey minimalist Kilim rug is made by hand on a tribal loom in Afghanistan, in wool, and measures 325 x 221 cm. A pale grey field with fine horizontal striping sits inside a wider charcoal border, with no medallions or motifs at all. The palette stays in grey, cream and charcoal.
The grey ground is consistent from one end of this grey minimalist kilim rug to the other, so the rug looks the same from every side of the room.
The design up close
The field has no motifs. Fine horizontal lines of grey, taupe and cream run across it, with darker strokes that thicken and thin along the length, so the surface reads as soft texture rather than pattern.
In this grey minimalist Kilim rug, the lighter central panel meets the darker border along a clean, square edge. The border carries the same fine striping in deeper brown-grey tones, so the two areas belong together.
Seen from across the room, the rug reads as one soft grey plane, and the border gives it a clear edge without any pattern to compete with the furniture.
Afghan kilims and plain designs
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs. This grey minimalist Kilim rug is plain instead, with no motifs at all, which suits modern rooms with a simple look.
Because there is nothing to follow in the design, this rug suits a room where the furniture, art and light carry the interest. It also works under a plain dining table, where the striping stays calm around the chairs.
What makes a Kilim different
A Kilim is flat woven. The weaver passes coloured weft threads over and under the warp threads to build the pattern, with no knots and no pile. The fine horizontal lines come from the weft threads, which cross the warp in bands of colour, and they give the surface its quiet texture.
The stripes also vary a little in tone along their length, which is part of the handwork.
Sizing this grey minimalist Kilim rug
At 325 x 221 cm the rug covers about 7.2 square metres. Under a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m, about 52.5 cm of rug shows past each end, and two armchairs can rest their front legs on the rug around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, which seats eight, the rug leaves roughly 42.5 cm at each end and 60.5 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back.
Lay the rug in the showroom with a plain table and chairs, so you can see the grey stripes against your own floor.
Looking after this grey minimalist Kilim rug
Keep heavy objects from being dragged across the surface, since a flat weave can pull out of line where it is snagged.
Vacuum both sides on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off. Use a non-slip underlay, because a light flat weave can creep on timber or tiles. Turn it around every six to twelve months so foot traffic wears it evenly, and blot spills with cold water and a clean white cloth. For a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, so vacuum under furniture often and lift the rug now and then.
