Rosy Pink Jaldar Runner
This rosy pink Jaldar runner is hand knotted in Pakistan from handspun wool and measures 255 x 80 cm, about 2.0 square metres. Our records note vegetable dyes. A soft rosy pink field carries a column of small diamond medallions, bordered in black, grey and cream.
The design up close
Diamond medallions with dark outlines and cream centres run in a single column down the middle of the field. Between them, angular dark points rise from the edges of the field, so the column sits inside a zigzag edge. Between the medallions the pink ground is plain, so the column is the only pattern in the centre.
The pink ground is even in tone with no secondary pattern, so the medallions and their outlines carry the detail. The rosy pink is warm rather than bright, which keeps the runner calm.
The border has a black and grey outer band with small geometric motifs in cream, and a narrow stripe runs inside it. At each short end, two bands of stripes in black, cream and grey finish the runner, with a fringe along the end. The stripes at each end are narrower than the border, so they read as a finished edge rather than a second pattern.
Where a rosy pink Jaldar runner comes from
Pakistan is known for wool rugs in classic designs such as Bokhara and Jaldar, with repeating motifs that suit traditional and modern rooms. Rug making grew quickly in Pakistan after independence in 1947, with Lahore among the early centres.
Jaldar motifs are angular and diamond shaped, while Bokhara designs are built from octagonal guls. Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
