Indigo Blue Tabriz Rug
This indigo blue Tabriz rug is hand knotted in Iran from lamb’s wool, and it measures 301 x 196 cm, or about 5.9 square metres. Its deep navy field carries a cream medallion, with pale blue, red, gold and green leaves and flowers spread across the ground. It is a Persian rug in the classic Tabriz medallion layout.
The design up close
The field of this indigo blue Tabriz rug is a deep indigo with a cream medallion at the centre, its heart a small red rosette. Pendant-shaped leaves in gold, red, green and pale pink radiate out from the medallion, and tiny flowers in the same colours fill the spaces between them. The dark ground sits behind all of this, so the motifs read as bright points across the rug.
A cream band with fine blue and red flowers frames the field. The outer border works in teal, gold and red, with small rectangular panels of gold motifs repeated along each side. The border is busy, but its teal and gold keep it from competing with the dark field, and the indigo blue Tabriz rug reads as one clear panel of colour.
Tabriz and its rugs
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries, and its workshops are known for fine knotting and a wide range of designs, from classic central medallions to all-over floral patterns. The quality of a Tabriz rug is often described by its raj, a count of knots over a set length of about seven centimetres. Higher raj means finer detail.
Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot since the mid 19th century, which gives a firm, even surface. Ask us to show you indigo blue Tabriz rugs of different raj side by side, so you can see the difference for yourself.
How this indigo blue Tabriz rug is made
Every Tabriz rug in our showroom is hand knotted in Iran, and this indigo blue Tabriz rug is made from lamb’s wool. Each knot is tied by hand, row after row on the loom, and the pile is then trimmed level so the medallion and flowers sit evenly. A wool pile is soft and resilient, which suits a rug that will be walked on every day.
Sizing it for your room
At 301 x 196 cm this indigo blue Tabriz rug covers about 5.9 square metres. In a lounge, a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 40 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs can rest their front legs on the rug. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves roughly 60 cm at each end and about 53 cm along each side. Its dark navy field works well with pale timber, cream walls and warm metallic accents.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
