Hexagon Chobi Kilim Rug
This hexagon Chobi kilim rug was hand woven in Afghanistan in wool and measures 353 x 262 cm. Rows of hexagons in teal, orange, red, ivory, mustard, lilac and green cover a warm grey ground, inside a border of small zigzag and diamond motifs in the same colours.
The design up close
The field holds six columns of hexagons. Each hexagon carries a small hooked diamond or cross in a contrasting colour, so a teal hexagon may hold red and a red one ivory. The colours change from hexagon to hexagon with no fixed order, which gives the rug its lively, patchwork look. Chevrons in the same palette run down both long sides of the field.
The border repeats small diamonds, arrows and zigzags in rust, lilac, sky blue, mustard and cream on grey. The grey ground ties the many colours together, so the rug feels busy up close and settled from across the room.
Hand weaving shows in small ways. The hexagons are not identical, the edges wander slightly, and in places a colour changes part way through a shape where the weaver picked up a new batch of yarn. Our records note vegetable dyes. Because both faces carry the pattern, you can turn the hexagon Chobi kilim rug over to spread the wear across both sides.
What makes a kilim different
A kilim is flat woven: the weaver passes coloured weft threads over and under the warp threads to build the pattern, with no knots and no pile. That makes this hexagon Chobi kilim rug thin and light for its size and, as our notes record, reversible, so you can use either face. Chobi means wood in Persian, and Chobi rugs are known for their natural tones.
Living with a hexagon Chobi kilim rug
With no pile to flatten, a kilim lies flat under furniture and suits rooms where chairs move a lot. Use a non-slip underlay, because a light flat weave can creep on timber or tiles. Vacuum both sides on a suction-only setting, turn it around every six to twelve months so it wears evenly, and blot spills with cold water and a clean white cloth. For a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, so vacuum under furniture often.
Sizing it for your room
At 353 x 262 cm the rug covers about 9.2 square metres. In a large living room it takes a full lounge setting: a sofa, two armchairs and a coffee table all sit on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm it leaves roughly 56 cm at each end and 81 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back. The grey ground suits concrete, timber and pale walls, and the colour gives a plain room a lift.
In a bedroom, a king bed, which is 183 cm wide in Australia, leaves about 85 cm of kilim showing on each side when the rug runs across the bed. At the foot of the bed, the hexagons give you something bright to step onto in the morning.
