Grey Super Kazak Rug
This grey Super Kazak rug is hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb wool and measures 282 x 201 cm. A soft grey-blue field carries a column of medallions down the centre, with a large red one at its heart, inside a cream and red border. It covers about 5.7 square metres.
The design up close
The central medallion is the largest and the deepest in colour: a red diamond-shaped form with cream and orange details and a small gold centre. Above and below it, cream-edged medallions in red and orange repeat the shape, and red and cream medallions finish the column at the top and bottom edges of the field.
Four octagonal medallions with blue centres and gold and brown outlines flank the central one, two on each side. Small rosettes, crosses and diamonds in red, orange and cream fill the grey-blue ground between them, so the field stays busy without competing with the red centre.
The border is a wide cream band filled with red and dark motifs of star and cross shapes. A deep red stripe frames the outside, with a thin edge of cream and red beside it. This grey Super Kazak rug suits timber floors, grey or white walls and neutral furniture, where the red centre draws the eye to the middle of the room.
Kazak rugs and where they come from
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan have revived these designs, so the old patterns live on in new Kazak rugs.
This grey Super Kazak rug is a Sarasar design. Our Kazak rugs are hand knotted in Afghanistan, and this one was made there too.
How this grey Super Kazak rug is made
Weavers tie every knot by hand on a loom, row after row, then shear the pile level. Hand knotting leaves small irregularities that show the handwork, which is part of what sets a hand-knotted rug apart.
Sizing it for your room
At 282 x 201 cm this grey Super Kazak rug covers about 5.7 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 31 cm of rug showing past each end, so the sofa sits close to the edges. Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm it leaves roughly 51 cm at each end and 55 cm along each side, enough for chairs to sit partly on the rug when pulled out.
The grey-blue field suits timber, grey or white walls and neutral furniture, and the red centre medallion makes a strong focal point in a living room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
