Grey Sultani Afghan Rug
This grey Sultani Afghan rug is a double hand knotted piece made in Afghanistan, measuring 123 x 81 cm, or about 1.0 square metre. Its cloud grey ground carries rust, teal and cream flowers, and the rug is made of lamb’s wool. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
A rust-red flower head sits at the top and bottom centre of the grey field, joined by fine teal and green stems that form a lattice of diamond panels. Each panel holds rust-red palmette motifs and small cream and teal sprigs, and a cream and red rosette sits at the centre where the stems meet.
The corners of each panel carry larger rust motifs with blue and cream accents, and small teal and cream blossoms fill the spaces between them. The field of this grey Sultani Afghan rug feels open rather than crowded, with plenty of grey showing through.
The outer border is grey with rust, teal and green flower motifs placed at intervals along the sides and ends. A narrow cream band with small red dots runs inside it, and the inner edge is marked by a thin line of blue and cream. Short, multicoloured fringe finishes the top and bottom edges.
Where Afghan rugs are made
This rug is made in Afghanistan, and Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. A Persian rug is woven in Iran, so the two come from different countries even though both are hand knotted. Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and this Afghan sultani rug is a floral piece in soft, muted colours.
How it is made
This grey Sultani Afghan rug is double hand knotted in lamb’s wool. Each knot is tied by hand on the loom, row after row, and the pile is trimmed level once the weaving is finished. Turn the rug over and you can read the design on the back, with the small irregularities that come from tying every knot by hand.
Sizing your grey Sultani Afghan rug
At 123 x 81 cm, this grey Sultani Afghan rug covers about 1.0 square metre, which suits a bedside, an entrance or the space in front of a single armchair. A queen bed is 153 cm wide, so the rug can sit beside one with its cloud grey ground in view.
Its cloud grey ground suits pale walls and timber floors, and the rust and teal flowers pick up accent colours in cushions or curtains.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
