Grey Floral Sultani Rug
This grey floral Sultani rug was double knotted by hand in Afghanistan from wool and measures 366 x 271 cm, about 9.9 square metres. Our records note German dyes. A taupe-grey field carries rows of flower heads, vines and small blossoms, with patterned borders on every side.
The design up close
Across the field, flower heads in cream, rust, red, blue and orange sit in rows, each linked to the next by thin vine scrolls in pale pink and brown. Between the rows, cream and rust oval motifs, which look like pomegranates, fill the spaces between the large blossoms. Small flowers and sprigs scattered through the vines are in green, gold and blue. The vines are thin and wind between the flower heads, so the grey ground shows through between them.
The border has three bands: a wide grey band with small floral sprigs in many colours, a narrow band of tiny rosettes, and an outer edge of small flowers on the same grey. This grey floral Sultani rug has no centre medallion, so the pattern runs evenly over the whole field.
The pomegranate-like ovals stack in three vertical lines, at the left, centre and right of the field, with flower heads in the gaps between them. On this grey floral Sultani rug, the ovals repeat in the same three lines from the top of the field to the foot.
How a grey floral Sultani rug is made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. This rug is double knotted from wool, and our records note German dyes. A room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months.
Afghan rugs and their designs
Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs and a heavier, more relaxed feel. This grey floral Sultani rug is softer, with its flower heads and vines set on a calm grey ground. Its muted ground lets the warm rust, orange and blue flowers stand out without overpowering a room.
Sizing it for your room
At 366 x 271 cm this grey floral Sultani rug suits a large living room or a family dining room. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 73 cm of rug at each end, and the front legs of two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 63 cm at each end and 85 cm along each side. The grey ground suits timber, cream and soft blue furnishings.
A patterned rug like this suits a room with plain furniture, since the flowers give the room its interest.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
