Grey Floral Gazney Rug
This grey floral Gazney rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan from wool and measures 292 x 175 cm. Its field is a soft grey blue, covered in cream and beige flowers, inside a beige border.
The design up close
Cream and beige flowers and buds sit across the grey field in a light, open pattern. Thin lines link the blooms, and the flower heads show several shades of cream and beige. The palette has few strong colours, so the flowers carry the whole design. Several of the larger flowers have darker tan centres, which adds depth to the cream petals.
The border is beige, with cream and tan flowers and tendrils forming a band along each edge. A fine line separates the border from the field. This grey floral Gazney rug has a soft, even palette from one end to the other, so the eye moves across the flowers without a strong colour to stop it.
Where Afghan rugs come from
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. Our Afghan collection ranges from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces, and this grey floral Gazney rug is one of the softer designs in that collection. Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs, so a floral piece like this one stands apart from many of them.
How this grey floral Gazney rug is made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and this rug is made from wool. Its soft grey blue ground and cream flowers make it a quiet piece for a room that already has other strong colours. The flowers sit in even rows across the field, so the pattern holds its shape from the centre to the border. The cream flowers are picked out clearly against the grey blue field, which makes them easy to see across a room.
Sizing it for your room
At 292 x 175 cm, this grey floral Gazney rug covers about 5.1 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 36 cm of rug showing past each end. Its length is about 2.9 metres, so the sofa and a coffee table can sit together on it with room to spare. If this grey floral Gazney rug sits on pale timber floors, the beige border blends into them, so the grey blue field stands out. A grey blue field also works with cream walls and grey or cream sofas.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
