Grey and Ivory Abstract Rug
The Petroglyph rug is a grey and ivory abstract rug, made on a hand loom from viscose and measuring 300 x 250 cm. That is about 7.5 square metres of floor.
The design up close
Soft grey with a green cast covers this grey and ivory abstract rug, washed through with patches of taupe, charcoal and pale ivory that look like weathered stone or old plaster.
Over the washes run columns of small marks: zigzags, stepped lines, chevrons, crosses and dots, set in loose vertical rows. They stand out in pale ivory against the darker patches and fade almost to nothing where the ground turns light, so the eye keeps finding new marks as you look.
There is no border and no centre, and the light and dark patches drift across the rug without a fixed direction, so it works from any side. Fine lines run down its length, which you can see as faint streaks in the grey. The tones are cool and quiet, so it suits a room with a lot of white or grey, and the darker charcoal patches hide everyday marks better than a plain pale rug would.
How this grey and ivory abstract rug is made
This modern rug is made on a hand loom from viscose. Viscose is a rayon fibre with a silk-like sheen, and that sheen gives the pale washes their soft glow as the light moves across the room. It is softer and less resilient than wool, so a rug in it suits rooms with lighter foot traffic, such as a bedroom, a formal lounge or a study. Lay it where light comes from a window to the side, and the sheen is easiest to see.
The surface is flat and even underfoot, and the small marks give it a loose geometric rug feel inside an abstract layout. The muted colours sit well with other contemporary style rugs, pale timber and grey upholstery.
Sizing it for your room
At this size the rug suits a living room or a main bedroom, and its muted colouring lets it cover a large floor without taking over the room. In a bedroom, a queen bed (153 cm wide) set across the 250 cm width leaves 48.5 cm of rug each side, and a king bed (183 cm) leaves 33.5 cm each side, enough to step onto something soft in the morning.
In a living room, a three seat sofa of about 2.2 m placed along the 300 cm length leaves about 40 cm at each end. Under a dining table, a 180 x 90 cm table for six leaves 60 cm at each end and 80 cm along each side, so chairs can stay on the rug when pulled out a little. A 240 x 100 cm table for eight leaves 30 cm at each end and 75 cm along each side.
Looking after your grey and ivory abstract rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the pile. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand. Rubbing spills can dull viscose, so this rug needs a cleaner who handles that fibre by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
