Green Waziri Afghan Rug
This green Waziri Afghan rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 247 x 179 cm, about 4.4 square metres. The ground is a grey-taupe, and eighteen medallion panels fill it in six rows of three, in red, blue, green, orange, cream and teal, so green is one of several colours in the field.
The design up close
Each of the six rows holds three medallion panels. Every panel is an octagonal or shield-shaped motif in one main colour, and smaller motifs in contrasting colours sit inside it. Thin rust-orange columns run between the panels, and a column of small medallions in green, red, teal and cream sits along each side of the field. The panels sit on a strict grid, so the eye reads the field row by row.
This green Waziri Afghan rug has a cream and rust border built from geometric stripes and rows of small rosettes. The top and bottom bands hold small diamonds and dots. The grey-taupe ground between the panels carries only faint small motifs, so the medallions stand out as separate pictures. The cream outer band runs the full length of the rug, so it frames the field whichever way the rug is laid.
Afghan rugs and their weaving
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and the rugs made there today range from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces. Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and their thick wool and patterned fields hide everyday wear. Patterned fields like the one on this rug suit family rooms, entrances and dining rooms, where everyday wear is more likely.
How it is made
This green Waziri Afghan rug is double hand knotted, so each knot is tied around two warp threads. Our records note German dyes for this rug, and the wool is lamb’s wool.
Sizing this green Waziri Afghan rug
At 247 x 179 cm the rug covers about 4.4 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves only about 14 cm of rug at each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on the rug around a coffee table. In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm for six leaves roughly 34 cm of rug at each end and about 45 cm along each side. This green Waziri Afghan rug suits a living room or a medium-sized dining room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
