Green Super Kazak Rug
This green Super Kazak rug was hand double knotted in Afghanistan in fine lamb’s wool, with vegetable dyes, and measures 210 x 140 cm. Its sage green field carries three stacked cross medallions in deep red, framed by a cream and red border.
The design up close
Three cross-shaped medallions stack down the centre of the green field. Each has a stepped, hooked outline in deep red, a cream band, and a column of small cream chevrons running down its middle. Pairs of cream rosettes flank the joins between the medallions, so the stack reads as one column from end to end.
Small red, cream and blue star and flower motifs fill the green ground around the medallions. A narrow stripe of red and cream frames the field, so the eye moves from the medallions out towards the border.
The border is the busiest part of the rug. A wide cream band carries a repeating row of rectangular medallions in red, blue, gold and cream, and the outer red band is studded with octagonal rosettes. The colours are bold, but each motif sits on clean lines.
Kazak rugs and their origins
Kazak rugs take their name from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. This green Super Kazak rug keeps the hooked medallions of that tradition, though its ground is green.
Afghan weavers revived these designs in recent decades, and this one is one of our Afghan pieces. Its medallions keep the deep red of that tradition, on a green ground.
How it is made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. This green Super Kazak rug is double knotted, as its title states, and the pile is fine lamb’s wool. Our records note vegetable dyes.
Each medallion is drawn with clear outlines, which is what makes the design easy to read from across the room. The colours are clear and saturated, and the cream rosettes give the eye a place to rest between medallions.
Sizing this green Super Kazak rug for your room
At 210 x 140 cm, this green Super Kazak rug covers about 2.9 square metres. Its size suits a living room where the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table, or a bedroom, where it can sit beside the bed.
The rug is about 2.1 m long, so it is too short for a dining table. A table of about 180 x 90 cm would leave under 20 cm of rug at each end. It also suits a study or reading corner, where the green ground sits well with timber and the red medallions add warmth.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
