Green Super Kazak Rug
This green Super Kazak rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb wool and measures 325 x 251 cm, about 8.2 square metres. The field is a soft green with red and beige details, and a wide cream border is worked with small geometric motifs.
The design up close
Diamond-shaped medallions fill the field of this green Super Kazak rug in staggered rows. Three large medallions sit across each row, and smaller medallions in red, orange and cream sit between the rows. The large ones change colour from row to row, in cream, red, navy and orange. Each diamond is outlined in red or navy, so the rows stand out against the green field.
Small stars, rosettes and crosses fill the gaps across the green ground in red, orange, cream and navy. The SaraSar design gives the rug its layered look, with several shapes set inside one another in each medallion. Their outlines in navy and red pick out each shape against the green.
The border is cream with a repeating band of small geometric motifs in red, brown and gold. Thin red and orange guard lines separate it from the field, and a narrow green edge runs round the outside. The guard lines are red and orange where they meet the cream band, which gives the edge a warm line.
Kazak rugs and their origins
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, so Kazak rugs like this one carry the old patterns into new work. Kazak rugs also feel heavy for their size, which helps them wear well in busy rooms.
How it is made
Our records note double hand knotting, so each knot in this green Super Kazak rug was tied by hand on a loom. The design shows on the back as well. Lamb wool gives the pile a soft surface underfoot.
Sizing this green Super Kazak rug
At 325 x 251 cm, this green Super Kazak rug covers about 8.2 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 53 cm of rug past each end. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 43 cm at each end and 76 cm along each side. Green sits well with timber floors and with cream or red furnishings. For a room of this size, the rug defines a clear zone for a lounge or dining setting.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
