Floral Kashan Darbar Rug
This floral Kashan Darbar rug is a 316 x 208 cm piece, hand knotted in Iran from wool. Its sage grey-green ground is covered with flowers and curling vines, with a soft medallion at the centre and a narrow cream and navy border. The palette is calm and cool, with navy, ivory and olive doing most of the work.
The design up close
The centre of this floral Kashan Darbar rug holds a medallion in a slightly darker grey-blue, built from scrolls and small rosettes. Its outline is soft, so it blends into the field and reads as a gentle focal point. Flowers and leaves fill the ground around it, and the vines run across the whole rug without a break.
The field is busy with small flowers in navy, cream, ivory, olive and gold, most set on thin stems that curl in every direction. A few touches of rust and yellow sit among them, but they are small and scattered.
The border is narrow and set in cream and navy. A row of small scrolls and leaf shapes repeats along each side, with thin guard stripes between the border and the field.
This rug is hand knotted in Iran from wool, with each knot tied by hand on a loom. Wool is soft underfoot, and the fine flowers stand out clearly on the pale ground.
Colour on a floral Kashan Darbar rug
Sage is the main colour, a grey-green that sits between grey and green. Navy outlines and ivory flowers give the design its contrast, while olive and gold keep the cool colours from looking flat. The ground is softer and greyer than the navy linework, so the pattern stands out clearly from it.
The darker navy outlines keep a pale rug from fading into a light floor. A floral Kashan Darbar rug in these muted tones suits living rooms with white walls, grey sofas or natural timber, and it sits well beside pale curtains.
Sizing it for your room
At 316 x 208 cm the rug covers about 6.6 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 48 cm of rug showing past each end, which suits a living room with the sofa and armchairs grouped around it. A floral Kashan Darbar rug this size also works under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, which leaves roughly 68 cm at each end and 59 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back.
Where it suits your home
Its quiet ground and fine flowers suit rooms where you want pattern without heavy colour. This floral Kashan Darbar rug works in a study, a reading corner or a lounge room with pale walls, and the cream border sits well against timber floors.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
