Floral Bijar Persian Runner
This floral Bijar Persian runner is double hand knotted in Iran from lamb’s wool, with vegetable dyes, and measures 408 x 93 cm. Its ivory field is covered with red and green flowers on vines, with navy scrolls and palmettes between them. A navy border carries small red and cream flowers, and a thin red edge runs along the outside. Its ivory ground keeps the floral pattern light and open.
The design up close
Down the length of this floral Bijar Persian runner, the field is divided into vertical panels by lines of navy scrolls. Each panel holds clusters of red blossoms and green leaves, with small blue and cream flowers between them. Navy and blue palmettes curl out from the centre of each panel and link to the next through fine vines. Each panel repeats the same clusters, so the field reads as a steady pattern.
The navy border of this floral Bijar Persian runner has a band of small red, pink and cream flowers along its inner edge, set beside a thin cream line. A narrow red edge sits on the outside, and it frames the runner neatly. Along the outer edge, the thin red line echoes the reds in the flowers. The navy is the darkest tone in the runner, so it frames the ivory field.
Persian weaving and this runner
Every rug in our Persian collection is hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk. This runner is lamb’s wool, with its pattern worked into the pile knot by knot. This floral Bijar Persian runner sits within that tradition. Persian rugs are woven in Iran, and this one is made the same way, with each knot tied by hand.
How this floral Bijar Persian runner is made
This runner is double hand knotted, so each tuft is tied by hand on the loom and then sheared level. Turn it over and the pattern shows on the back, with the small irregularities that only hand tying leaves. Our records note vegetable dyes, and the reds and greens sit softly against the ivory field.
Sizing it for your hallway
At 408 x 93 cm, this floral Bijar Persian runner covers about 3.8 square metres. Its 4.08 m length suits a long hallway or a corridor. A runner this long can cover a long hallway in one piece. Allow about 10 to 20 cm of bare floor on each side, so a passage about 113 to 133 cm wide suits it best.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
