Deep Red Khamyab Rug
This deep red Khamyab rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 575 x 402 cm. Its field is a deep, even red, with navy outlines around rows of medallions and nested borders in red and dark blue framing the whole piece, so the rug reads as a bold, dark base for a room.
The design up close
Across this deep red Khamyab rug, rows of octagonal medallions sit in neat grid lines. Each medallion has a navy outline and a centre of small white and red diamonds, and the spaces between them carry smaller dark motifs. The navy outlines keep each medallion crisp against the red ground, so the pattern stays clear from several metres away.
Near the edge of the field, a border of white-edged, stepped shapes in red and navy runs along the length, followed by a band of tiny geometric motifs in navy and red. A fine white zigzag line marks the outer edge.
Navy and red sit side by side throughout the piece, and the dark tones give the bright red depth.
Where Afghan rugs come from
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and some of the rugs made there today use hand-spun wool and natural dyes. Some use natural dyes from plants such as madder, which gives the deep reds Afghan rugs are known for. Our Afghan collection ranges from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces, and this rug belongs to the bolder, traditional end of that range.
How this deep red Khamyab rug is made
This rug is double hand knotted, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom, one knot at a time. Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with the slight irregularities that hand knotting leaves. Our records note vegetable dyes for this piece.
At 23.1 square metres, this deep red Khamyab rug is a large piece, and the medallions line up across the whole width of the field.
Sizing it for your room
At 575 x 402 cm this deep red Khamyab rug covers about 23.1 square metres, a size for a large living room or dining room. A 2.2 m three-seat sofa set along the length leaves about 178 cm of rug on each side. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, roughly 168 cm of rug shows at each end and about 151 cm along each side.
Deep red reads well against pale walls and dark timber floors, and it sits comfortably beside dark wooden furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
