Dark Navy Blue Kazak Rug
This dark navy blue Kazak rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan and measures 306 x 248 cm. Our records list New Zealand wool and German dyes. Four large square medallions in red, saffron and ivory sit on a deep navy field, framed by a wide ivory border full of red and green stars.
The design up close
The field splits into two matching halves. In each half, two square medallions hold a red cross-shaped star inside saffron and blue frames, edged with a comb-like ivory fringe. Between the squares run horizontal panels in ivory, blue and red, packed with hooks, stars and small octagons. Small eight-pointed stars and hooked motifs in blue, red and ivory fill the navy ground around them.
The main border is ivory with a row of red and green star rosettes and small flowers. Narrow red and blue guard stripes with zigzag edging sit inside and outside it.
The navy is deep enough to read almost black in low light and clearly blue beside a window, so the dark navy blue Kazak rug looks different through the day. For cushions and throws, pick out the saffron or the brick red.
Where Kazak designs come from
The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs. Weavers in Afghanistan have revived these designs, and this dark navy blue Kazak rug follows them: square medallions, hooks and stars in strong, saturated colour.
How it is made
Weavers tie each knot by hand on a loom, then shear the pile. Turn the rug over and the squares and stars show clearly on the back, with the slight irregularities of hand knotting. A good Kazak has a dense pile and feels heavy for its size.
Sizing it for your room
At 306 x 248 cm the rug covers about 7.6 square metres. Under a king bed, which is 183 cm wide in Australia, about 61 cm of rug shows on each side. In a living room it holds a three-seat sofa and two armchairs with room to spare. A dark navy blue Kazak rug with this much pattern hides everyday wear, which suits family rooms and entrances.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
