Cream Ziegler Afghan Rug
This cream Ziegler Afghan rug is a hand knotted rug made in Afghanistan from Gazney wool, and it measures 416 x 309 cm.
The ground of this cream Ziegler Afghan rug is a soft taupe, and the cream and gold motifs sit on top of it in rows. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
The field is set out in a regular grid. Vertical columns of small cream and gold cartouches run the length of this cream ziegler afghan rug, and between them sit smaller ivory and grey blue star shapes. The motifs repeat row after row, with the same arrangement from the centre to the edges.
The border is wide and framed in two bands. A narrow gold outer band with fine dots sits at the edge, and inside it a broad blue-grey band carries rosettes in gold and rust, set at regular intervals along each side. A thin cream guard line separates the border from the field.
Short fringe finishes both ends. Along the sides the rosettes are the largest shapes in the rug, so the border gives the field a firm outline on a hard floor.
Lay the longest sides parallel to the sofa, so the rows of the grid run in line with the furniture and the room looks ordered. From a standing position, the grid and the border read as two separate textures.
Afghan rugs and where they are made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and some rugs made there today use hand-spun wool and natural dyes. This rug is wool, made in Afghanistan.
How a cream Ziegler Afghan rug is made
This cream Ziegler Afghan rug is hand knotted from Gazney wool. The pile is close sheered, so it lies low and even across the field. A room-size rug like this one can take a small team of weavers many months.
The taupe, gold and blue-grey tones sit together with soft contrast, so the motifs stand out gently.
Sizing it for your room
At 416 x 309 cm this cream Ziegler Afghan rug covers about 12.9 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 98 cm of rug showing past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and armchairs can rest on it.
Under an eight-seat dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 88 cm at each end and 104.5 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back and stay on the rug. The taupe ground sits well with muted, earthy furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
