Cream Vintage Qum Rug
This cream vintage Qum rug is a Persian rug, hand knotted in Iran from lamb wool, and it measures 200 x 148 cm. Its pale cream field carries rows of flower-filled urns in soft pink, navy and green, and the pattern repeats evenly across the rug.
The design up close
Each urn in this cream vintage Qum rug is brick red and brown, with pink and cream blossoms rising from its top and green leaves spreading from its base. The urns sit in staggered rows, so the cream ground shows between them in narrow diagonal bands. Between the rows, navy and blue sprigs, grey-green fern fronds and small pink flowers climb on thin stems.
Yellow buds and olive leaves sit among the larger blossoms, and fine navy outlines keep each motif crisp against the cream. Pink and red tones return in every urn, so the warm notes repeat across the field and keep the cream from looking flat. The cream vintage Qum rug reads as one soft pattern across a room and as separate flowers up close.
Persian rugs and how they are made
Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk. Persian rugs come in many styles, from the graceful central medallions of Kashan to the bold geometry of Heriz, and each one carries the look of its own weaving tradition. Because each knot is tied by hand, no two rugs of the same design match exactly in small details.
How this cream vintage Qum rug is made
This cream vintage Qum rug is double hand knotted, so every knot was tied by hand on a loom. Our records note vegetable dyes. Its pile is lamb wool, and the motifs are worked in small, clear shapes, so the outlines look sharp against the cream. Hand knotting leaves small irregularities, so the pattern is not exact to the millimetre across the field.
Sizing it for your room
At 200 x 148 cm the cream vintage Qum rug covers about 3.0 square metres. That size suits a small living room corner or a space beside a bed, where the front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table, chairs pulled back would run off the edge, so keep this rug for a sitting area. Pale cream suits light timber or tiled floors, white walls and grey or blue furnishings.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
