Cream Vaziri Afghan Rug
This cream Vaziri Afghan rug is double hand knotted in Afghanistan, in wool, and measures 419 x 295 cm, about 12.4 square metres. Its cream ground is filled with rows of octagons, each holding a bright medallion in red, blue, ochre, green and rust, so the rug is lively and colourful while the ground stays light.
The design of this cream Vaziri Afghan rug
Five columns of octagons run down the field in rows, and each octagon holds a star-and-diamond medallion outlined in cream, navy and red. The colours change from one octagon to the next, so the rug reads as a repeated grid rather than a single large motif. Small diamond and cross shapes in red, ochre and blue sit in the gaps between the octagons.
The border is a wide cream band that frames the field, with a thin multi-coloured strip in red, brown and beige just inside it. The outer edge carries a slim band of small motifs in red, brown and beige. The border colours echo the medallions, so the frame and the field belong together.
Afghan rugs and their weaving
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition. Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and some use wool that is spun by hand. A room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months, and at about 12.4 square metres this cream Vaziri Afghan rug is that size.
It belongs to the group of handmade traditional rugs, with its octagons and bold colour set on a light ground.
How it is made
This cream Vaziri Afghan rug is double hand knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on the loom and the pile is trimmed level afterwards. The wool is handspun, and our records note vegetable dyes. The cream ground is the lightest part of the rug, and the red, blue and ochre medallions sit on it evenly, so the whole surface feels balanced.
Sizing it for your room
At 419 x 295 cm the rug covers about 12.4 square metres. Under a sofa of around 2.2 m, about 99 cm of rug shows past each end, so a full lounge setting fits on it. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug shows roughly 89 cm at each end and 97 cm along each side.
For a table of about 180 x 90 cm with six chairs, the margins grow to about 119 cm at each end and 102 cm along each side. This cream Vaziri Afghan rug suits pale timber, white or stone walls and neutral furniture, where its colours stand out against a light room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
