Cream Super Kazak Runner
This cream Super Kazak runner was hand double knotted in Afghanistan in wool, with vegetable dyes, and measures 173 x 57 cm. Its ivory centre panel carries a column of medallions in red, cream and navy, set inside a deep red border.
The design up close
Navy medallions sit at the top and bottom of the column, each with a cream star at its centre. Between them, red and cream medallions alternate down the panel, some with small diamond centres in blue or cream. The motifs are spaced evenly, so the panel reads as a steady rhythm from one end to the other.
The ivory ground stays clear around each medallion, so the cream shows between them and the panel never feels crowded. Some medallions have short hooked arms reaching out sideways, which break up the straight vertical line.
The border is deep red, with rows of small cream, blue and red diamonds and rosettes running along both sides. A thin cream stripe separates the border from the centre panel. The border’s small diamonds repeat the navy and cream of the medallions, which ties the panel and border together.
Kazak rugs and their origins
Kazak rugs take their name from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia. Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs. This runner keeps the hooked medallions of that tradition, set on an ivory ground.
In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan have revived these designs, often in wool. This cream Super Kazak runner is one of our Afghan pieces, and its ivory centre is its main colour.
How this cream Super Kazak runner is made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. This runner is double knotted, as its title states, and the pile is wool. Our records note vegetable dyes, and the ivory, red and navy colours are knotted into the same surface.
Sizing this cream Super Kazak runner for your hallway
At 173 x 57 cm, this cream Super Kazak runner covers about 1 square metre. Its width suits a hallway about 77 to 97 cm wide, which leaves 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side.
At this length it also suits a kitchen galley, where it runs along the benches, or the floor beside a bed. The ivory centre is a light tone for a narrow hallway, and the red border adds warmth. Its narrow width suits a slim hallway where a wider rug would crowd the walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
