Cream Pine Tree Design Rug
This cream pine tree design rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool, double knotted, and measures 296 x 244 cm. Its soft cream ground carries fine tree-like stems in grey, sage and pale gold, with touches of red, so the rug reads as calm and light from across the room.
The design up close
Tall, branching stems rise through the field, and in several places they end in conifer-like tufts in grey green. These vertical forms give the rug its pine tree name. Between them, small flowers, buds and curling vines spread across the cream ground, drawn in fine lines of grey, sage and pale gold.
Red accents break up the softer colours. Small red flowers and V-shaped leaves cluster near the top centre and the lower middle, and a cream and gold lozenge sits at the bottom centre. The pattern is dense but not crowded, so each motif keeps its own space.
The border is a wide cream band with a repeated row of small red rosettes and leaves along its edge. Thin stripes in pale yellow and grey frame the field, so the outer edge stays light and the inner panel stands out.
Afghanistan and its weaving tradition
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and this cream pine tree design rug comes from our collection of designer rugs made there. Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, so each design is built up slowly, row by row. A room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months.
This cream pine tree design rug is double knotted, as its title states, and the pile is lamb’s wool. Our records note vegetable dyes, and the cream, grey and sage tones sit softly against one another across the field.
Sizing this cream pine tree design rug for your room
At 296 x 244 cm, this cream pine tree design rug covers about 7.2 square metres. In a living room, the front legs of a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m can sit on it with about 38 cm showing past each end, and two armchairs can rest their front legs on it beside a coffee table.
In a dining room, a table of about 180 x 90 cm with chairs around it leaves roughly 58 cm of rug at each end and about 77 cm along each side, so the chairs can slide back and stay on the rug. The cream ground suits pale timber, linen and neutral walls, and the red accents pick up cushions and artwork.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
