Cream Mood Birjand Rug
This Cream Mood Birjand Rug is a hand knotted rug from Iran, measuring 192 x 204 cm, or about 3.9 square metres. Its ivory field holds a round medallion in rust, navy and ivory, inside a rust border with floral vines and a navy outer edge.
The design up close
A round medallion sits at the centre of the ivory field of this Cream Mood Birjand Rug. Its middle is a rust coloured rosette with navy and ivory points radiating outward, and around it the motifs form a ring of navy and ivory lobes. The shape reads clearly from across the room, even though the detail is fine.
The ivory field is covered with small motifs in navy, rust and grey blue, set close together so the ground reads as one fine texture. Taken together, the bold centre and the fine ground give the rug a clear focal point with a busy surround. The corners carry small motifs too, so no part of the field is left as plain colour between the medallion and the border.
The rust border of this Cream Mood Birjand Rug carries floral vines and small cream and blue diamonds. Narrow guard stripes in cream and navy separate the bands, and the outermost edge is navy, so the rust band stands out against the ivory field.
Where this Cream Mood Birjand Rug comes from
A Persian rug is woven in Iran, and the same term covers rugs with very different designs. Persian rug and Persian carpet mean the same thing, so the two names are interchangeable when you shop.
Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom. A smaller piece like this one takes less time than a room-size rug, which can take a weaver many months.
Sizing this Cream Mood Birjand Rug
At 192 x 204 cm this Cream Mood Birjand Rug is almost square and covers about 3.9 square metres, so it suits a smaller space than a dining room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m is wider than this rug, so the rug works best in a sitting area with two armchairs and a coffee table, where the front legs of the chairs can rest on it.
The cream field works with pale walls and timber, and the rust border adds warmth in a room that needs colour. It also suits a reading corner or a space beside a bed, where the medallion can sit in front of you rather than under foot.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths favour dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
