Cream Gazney Runner
This cream Gazney runner was hand knotted in Afghanistan from Gazney wool and measures 291 x 83 cm, about 2.4 square metres. The ground is a soft ivory with a faint beige cast, and the field carries rows of tonal rosettes and leaves in tan, rust and grey. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The cream Gazney runner up close
The field of this cream Gazney runner is laid out in staggered columns of large rosettes. Each one is a cluster of pointed petals in soft tan and rust with a brown outline, and small leaves and flower heads sit between them. Because the drawing is tone on tone, the pattern shows as soft texture rather than strong contrast. The rosettes sit in columns with smaller leaf motifs between them, and the field keeps one pale tone, so the pattern never becomes busy.
The border has a cream outer band with small leaf and flower motifs in tan, set between thin inner stripes in brown and grey. A narrow guard line separates it from the field. The short ends are finished with a fine fringe, and the long field reads like a path of rosettes running from one end to the other. The outer band is cream and the inner stripe brown, so the frame stays light and the rosettes hold their outline.
Each rosette has a lighter centre, and the leaves that fill the spaces between them are drawn in the same tan as the outlines. On this cream Gazney runner, one large rosette sits on the centre line at each end of the field.
Afghan rugs and their knots
This cream Gazney runner comes from Afghanistan, where rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. Afghan rugs have thick wool and patterned fields that hide everyday wear, so they suit family rooms, entrances, hallways and dining rooms. Its soft, tonal field also suits calm, modern interiors, and thick wool holds up well to daily walking.
Sizing your hallway
At 291 x 83 cm, this cream Gazney runner suits a hallway about 103 to 123 cm wide, with 10 to 20 cm of floor showing on each side. Its length suits a hallway or a kitchen galley. The pale ground helps brighten a dim passage, so the runner lifts the feel of a narrow space.
A cream runner shows dust more than a dark one, so vacuum it regularly and blot marks as soon as they appear. Its 83 cm width also suits a bedside, where it leaves room to walk. The fine fringe at each short end needs only gentle brushing.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
