Cream Garden Chobi Rug
This cream garden Chobi rug is one of our oriental rugs from Afghanistan, hand double knotted in wool and measuring 402 x 295 cm, about 11.9 square metres. The field is pale sand and taupe, with a sand border that carries small floral motifs along each side.

The field is a grid of square compartments, six across, divided by brown lines. Each compartment holds a small medallion in khaki, sand and soft brown, with a paler centre and fine detail around the edge. The compartments repeat in regular rows from top to bottom, so the whole field reads as one even pattern.
The palette is quiet. Pale sand, taupe and khaki dominate, and the brown outlines are the only strong tone in the field. The main border is sand, with a band of small floral motifs along each side and a narrow inner border separating it from the grid.
Chobi rugs and their colours
Chobi means wood in Persian, a nod to the soft, natural tones these rugs are known for. Chobi rugs are hand knotted in Afghanistan, and their gentle palette sits easily in both classic and contemporary homes.
Chobi rugs often come in ivory, sand, soft green, rust and blue. Their calm colours make them one of the easiest handmade rugs to live with, which suits a cream garden Chobi rug in a living room, dining room or bedroom.
How it is made
Our records note German dyes. The tones stay even across the whole field, and the grid repeats with the same spacing from edge to edge.
The rug is listed as hand double knotted, so each knot was tied by hand on a loom. This cream garden Chobi rug was tied in Afghanistan one knot at a time, in the same way as other rugs from that weaving tradition.
Sizing it for your room
At 402 x 295 cm, this cream garden Chobi rug is a long rectangle. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, it runs about 91 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa can rest on it.
A table of about 240 x 100 cm for eight seats sits with about 81 cm of rug at each end and about 98 cm along each side, so chairs can slide back and stay on the rug.
The calm palette makes this cream garden Chobi rug easy to live with, and it sits well with both classic and contemporary furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
