Cream Floral Gazney Rug
This cream floral Gazney rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan from wool and measures 379 x 264 cm. Flowers and buds in beige and taupe cover a pale cream field, inside a cream border of matching motifs.
The design up close
Flowers in beige and taupe sit across the whole field in an all-over pattern. Rosettes and buds are linked by thin stems, so the field reads as light and open. The palette is soft, with ivory, blush and beige working together. Larger flower heads sit in staggered rows, and smaller buds fill the gaps between them. Some blooms face forward and others are drawn in profile, which gives the field a little movement.
The border is a band of cream and beige with rows of flowers and tendrils that follow the edges. A fine line separates it from the field. This cream floral Gazney rug has very few strong colours, so its flowers carry the look from one end to the other.
Because this cream floral Gazney rug is pale overall, it reads as one soft surface from a distance. Up close, the variation in tone between each flower head gives the field a gentle texture.
Where Afghan rugs come from
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition. Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. Our Afghan collection ranges from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces, and this cream floral Gazney rug is one of the softer designs in it. Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs, so a floral piece like this stands apart from many of them.
How this cream floral Gazney rug is made
This rug is hand knotted from wool in Afghanistan, one knot at a time on a loom. Its pile holds the flowers in clear, even rows, and the cream ground stays uniform across the field. Its cream ground and beige flowers stay in one soft palette from one end to the other.
Sizing it for your room
At 379 x 264 cm, this cream floral Gazney rug covers about 10 square metres. In a living room, a three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 80 cm of rug showing past each end. For a dining room, an eight seat table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves about 70 cm at each end and 82 cm along each side, enough for chairs to slide back. At this size the rug suits a large living room or a dining room with space for eight.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
