Cream Chobi Ziegler Rug
This cream Chobi Ziegler rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan from Gazney wool, and it measures 420 x 300 cm, or about 12.6 square metres. Its ivory field carries a column of muted rosettes in grey-blue, rust and sand, framed by a wide sand-coloured border with cream and grey-blue motifs.
The design up close
The field is ivory with a central column of medallions running from top to bottom. Each medallion is a rosette of grey-blue petals edged in sand and touched with rust, and smaller flowers and buds fill the spaces between them. Medallions also sit either side of the column. Between the medallions, small cream flowers and grey-blue buds are scattered over the ivory ground.
In this cream Chobi Ziegler rug, the border is wide and sand coloured, with cream and grey-blue rosettes and palmettes spaced along it. Thin darker guard stripes separate the border from the field and from the outer edge. The colours sit close together and stay soft, so the rug reads as one calm surface from across a room, and the rosettes show up when you step closer.
The Ziegler style and Chobi weaving
Many Chobi rugs follow Ziegler designs: soft-toned, large-scale patterns first made in the Sultanabad (Arak) district of Persia from the 1880s for European and American buyers. Chobi rugs often come in ivory, sand, soft green, rust and blue, and they are hand knotted in Afghanistan. The ivory and sand of this rug follow that palette closely.
How a cream Chobi Ziegler rug is made
Weavers tie each knot by hand on a loom, row after row. A room-size rug like this can take a small team of weavers many months. Our records note that it is tightly knotted and close clipped. Turn this cream Chobi Ziegler rug over and the design shows on the back, with the small irregularities that only hand knotting leaves.
Sizing it for your room
At 420 x 300 cm, this cream Chobi Ziegler rug covers about 12.6 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 100 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. In a dining room, a table of about 240 x 100 cm leaves roughly 90 cm at each end and 100 cm along each side, enough for the chairs to slide back without leaving the rug.
The ivory ground of this cream Chobi Ziegler rug suits pale timber, cream walls and soft neutral furnishings, where the grey-blue and rust motifs can be seen clearly. Against pale walls the rug looks soft, and its rust and grey-blue tones give the room a little colour.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
