Cream Chobi Gazney Wool Rug
This cream Chobi Gazney wool rug was double knotted by hand in Afghanistan and measures 379 x 264 cm, about 10.0 square metres. Our records note vegetable dyes. Its field is ivory and sand, with soft tan and grey-green motifs spread evenly over the surface, and a wide cream border frames it.
The design up close
Rows of palmette and rosette motifs in tan, sand and grey-green climb the field. Thin pale vines link them, so the motifs read as a lattice rather than separate blocks. A faint band of slightly deeper tone runs down the centre of the field. Between the rows, small rosettes in soft grey-blue break up the sand tone.
The border is wide and cream, with tan palmettes and small rosettes set between narrow guard stripes. This cream Chobi Gazney wool rug has soft, low contrast throughout, so the pattern reads as texture rather than bold colour.
How a cream Chobi Gazney wool rug is made
Chobi rugs are hand knotted in Afghanistan, often in hand-spun wool coloured with vegetable dyes. This rug is double knotted, and our records note vegetable dyes too. Chobi means wood in Persian, a nod to the soft, natural tones these rugs are known for. Vegetable dyes give gentle variation in shade, which is called abrash and is valued as a sign of handwork.
Where Chobi rugs work
Their calm palette makes Chobi rugs one of the easiest handmade rugs to live with, and this cream Chobi Gazney wool rug suits living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms. It works with both classic and contemporary furniture. Its lighter tone makes it a good choice where a heavier pattern would feel too busy.
Sizing it for your room
At 379 x 264 cm this cream Chobi Gazney wool rug suits a living room or dining room. A three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 80 cm of rug at each end, and the front legs of two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 70 cm at each end and 82 cm along each side. Ivory and sand sit well with timber, white walls and soft greens.
Its lighter tone suits a bright room, and the rug picks up any warm wood tones in the furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
