Cobalt Blue Kashan Rug
This cobalt blue Kashan rug is hand knotted from lamb’s wool on a cotton foundation, and it measures 400 x 300 cm. The mid blue field carries a cream and gold medallion at its centre, inside a deep navy border worked with cream and gold scrolling vines. It is a large rug for a formal living room or a dining room with space around it.
The design up close
The medallion at the centre is built from radiating points around a small star, with a pale ring at its edge and small flowers spreading outward from it. The blue ground around it is covered with tiny blossoms, leaves and curling stems in ivory, gold, rust and soft green. From a distance the surface reads as one calm blue, and up close the small flowers come forward.
In each corner of this cobalt blue Kashan rug, a cream and gold spandrel curls in toward the medallion. Each one is outlined in a darker blue, which ties the corners back to the centre of the field. Narrow pale stripes separate the field from the navy border.
The main border is the darkest part of the rug. Cream, gold and grey vines run along it, with palmette-like flowers placed at intervals, and a thin light guard sits at the outer edge. The dark border makes the cream medallion and corners stand out against the blue.
Colour in your room
The mid blue field is a cool base, and the cream medallion keeps the centre from feeling heavy. A cobalt rug like this suits cream or white walls, timber floors, and grey or ivory furnishings. The gold in the medallion and border picks up lamplight in the evening.
At this size a cobalt blue carpet sets the colour for the whole room, so it is worth choosing cushions and curtains from the cream and gold in the medallion.
How a cobalt blue Kashan rug is made
Weavers tie each knot by hand on a loom, row after row, then trim the pile level. Lamb’s wool forms the pile, and a cotton foundation holds the knots in place. Because every knot is tied by hand, the rows carry small differences in spacing and tone that mark it as handwork.
Sizing it for your room
At 400 x 300 cm, this cobalt blue Kashan rug covers about 12.0 square metres. In a living room, a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m leaves roughly 90 cm of rug showing past each end, and two armchairs can rest their front legs on the rug around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves about 80 cm at each end and 100 cm along each side. That is enough room for chairs to slide back while staying on the rug.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
