Camel Shirvan Afghan Rug
This camel Shirvan Afghan rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan from handspun New Zealand wool and measures 309 x 247 cm, about 7.6 square metres. The ground is a warm camel to taupe brown, with three medallions stacked down the centre. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The camel Shirvan Afghan rug up close
The top and bottom medallions are octagons outlined in cream, filled with rows of small squares in cream, red, blue and rust. Each has a blue-edged centre with a small diamond. The middle medallion is smaller and rectangular, framed in gold and deep red, with a diamond in its centre. Small arrow motifs in cream, blue and gold run between the medallions across the field. Each medallion outline is a single line of cream, which keeps the octagons crisp against the camel ground.
Around the medallions, the field is filled with pairs of small stepped motifs in red, blue and cream, set in columns. This camel Shirvan Afghan rug has a wide outer band of taupe with small red, blue and orange motifs, separated from the field by several narrow guard stripes in rust, cream and dark red. The field around the medallions is a plain camel ground with a fine horizontal sheen, so the medallions and border do most of the work.
Down each side of this camel Shirvan Afghan rug, a column of star shaped motifs in red, blue and orange sits between the medallions and the border. The three medallions share one vertical centre line, so the layout reads straight down the rug.
Afghan rugs and their knots
The camel Shirvan Afghan rug comes from Afghanistan, where rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. Their thick wool and patterned fields hide everyday wear, so Afghan rugs suit family rooms, entrances, hallways and dining rooms.Afghan rugs come in many sizes, and this one at 309 x 247 cm is a large rug for a formal lounge.
Sizing it for your room
The camel Shirvan Afghan rug covers about 7.6 square metres at 309 x 247 cm. With a 2.2 m sofa, about 45 cm of rug shows past each end, and the front legs of the sofa and both armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug leaves roughly 35 cm at each end and 74 cm along each side, so chairs can slide back without leaving the rug. Cream walls, timber floors and soft grey furnishings suit the camel ground. The octagon medallions give the rug a formal centre that suits a dining room.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
