Brown Floral Gazani Rug
This brown floral Gazani rug was made in Afghanistan from lamb wool, fine double hand knotted, and measures 395 x 277 cm. A muted grey brown field carries rows of large cream palmettes, linked by fine vines, and a wide cream border holds sage and dusty rose floral motifs. The palette is quiet and even, so the rug works as a calm base for a large room.
The design up close
The field is set out as rows and columns of cream and ivory palmettes. Larger palmettes sit in a central column with smaller ones on either side, and small leaves and buds sit on thin olive and cream vines between them. From across the room the field looks calm, and close up it shows how many separate motifs fill it.
The border is wide and cream, carrying large rosettes and leafy motifs in sage, olive and dusty rose. Narrow guard stripes separate it from the field, and a thin band runs along the outer edge. The brown ground runs right up to the guard stripe, so the cream palmettes stand out clearly against it. Across this brown floral Gazani rug, the border and field work together as two clear tones.
Afghan rugs and their design
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and its rugs range from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces. A brown floral Gazani rug sits in the calmer part of that range, and its patterned field suits family rooms, dining rooms and entrances, where the design hides everyday wear.
How it is made
This brown floral Gazani rug is hand knotted in Afghanistan from lamb wool, and our records note double hand knotting. Turn it over and the palmettes show on the back, with the slight irregularities that come from tying each knot by hand. At this size the rug is worked across its full width, so every row of motifs is built from many separate knots.
Sizing this brown floral Gazani rug for your room
At 395 x 277 cm the rug covers about 10.9 square metres, so it suits a large living room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 88 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing the sofa can rest their front legs on the rug. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm it leaves roughly 78 cm at each end and 88 cm along each side, enough room for chairs to slide back.
The brown ground suits cream, stone and timber furnishings, and the cream palmettes pick up white walls and pale upholstery.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
