Blue Vintage Tabriz Rug
This blue vintage Tabriz rug is hand double knotted from lamb’s wool and measures 382 x 295 cm, or about 11.3 square metres. Its field is a faded peach and tan, with blue-grey corner motifs and a blue-grey medallion that carry the colour through the room. It is a vintage piece with a soft, aged finish.
The design up close
Four corner motifs in pale blue, pink and green sit inside the field of this blue vintage Tabriz rug, each with curling outlines. The centre holds a medallion in faded blue-grey and brown, with smaller motifs in pink and khaki around it. Across the field, small dark dots and tiny flowers add texture, and the peach ground shows through the wear in lighter patches.
A khaki and pink border runs round the field of this blue vintage Tabriz rug, with a repeating pattern of small rosettes and scrolls and a fine inner band separating it from the field. The outer band is narrow and in a similar khaki, so the whole rug reads as one soft, muted piece. Along the outer band the khaki is the most even colour in the rug, which makes the edge of this blue vintage Tabriz rug look settled.
Colour and where it suits
The peach, khaki and blue-grey tones suit linen sofas, timber floors and natural fibres. Blue-grey cushions or a pale blue armchair draw out the corners and medallion. Because the palette is muted, this blue vintage Tabriz rug works in both modern and traditional rooms, and it sits well beside plain walls and simple furniture. Cream or sand curtains pick up the peach ground, and a pale timber frame keeps the piece from looking heavy.
How this blue vintage Tabriz rug is made
This rug is hand double knotted from lamb’s wool. Each knot is tied by hand, and the vintage finish comes from years of wear: the colours have faded and the pile has worn down, so the rug feels thinner than a new one. The pattern and colours still show through, most clearly where the pile has held up best.
Sizing it for your room
At 382 x 295 cm, this blue vintage Tabriz rug covers about 11.3 square metres, a large floor for a lounge or a dining room. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 81 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 71 cm at each end and about 98 cm along each side, enough room for the chairs to slide back.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
