Blue Vintage Kerman Rug
This blue vintage Kerman rug is made from lamb’s wool and measures 380 x 289 cm, or about 11.0 square metres. Its field is an aqua blue, the strongest colour in the piece, with a khaki medallion at the centre. Our records note the rug was over-dyed in aqua blue to bring out its patterns.
The design up close
The aqua field of this blue vintage Kerman rug carries a central medallion in faded khaki and olive, with rosettes and small circular motifs in olive, pale blue and cream around it. Rosettes in the same khaki and olive sit near the corners of the field, echoing the medallion. The aqua ground shows through between the motifs, and some areas are paler where the colour has worn. Blue and khaki tones alternate across the field, so no single motif dominates.
The border is pale sage with a navy-blue vine and small circles, separated from the field by a fine stripe. The vine runs continuously around all four sides, so the edge looks as full as the centre. The navy in the border frames the lighter aqua of this blue vintage Kerman rug well.
Where this blue vintage Kerman rug suits a room
The aqua field suits rooms with white walls, pale timber or grey furnishings, where the blue stands out without overwhelming the space. Khaki and olive cushions pick up the medallion, and navy accents echo the border. The faded tones make the rug sit quietly in a lounge or a dining room. A cream or white sofa keeps the aqua from dominating, and a timber coffee table gives the khaki medallion a warm base.
How it is made
This blue vintage Kerman rug is made from lamb’s wool, which gives the pile a soft hand. The wear has left the medallion and motifs softer than the field, so the pattern reads as a series of pale shapes rather than sharp lines. The overall effect is an older rug with a clear design still visible.
Sizing it for your room
At 380 x 289 cm, this blue vintage Kerman rug covers about 11.0 square metres, which suits a large lounge. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 80 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs facing it can rest their front legs on the rug. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 70 cm at each end and about 95 cm along each side, enough room for the chairs to slide back.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
