Blue Vintage Ghadim Rug
This blue vintage Ghadim rug is a Persian rug from Iran, hand double knotted from wool, and it measures 390 x 300 cm, or about 11.7 square metres. Its colour is charcoal grey, with no clear blue in the field, so the rug reads as a dark centre framed by pale cream. Years of wear have lightened part of the right side to a pale grey wash.
The design up close
A large medallion fills the centre of this blue vintage Ghadim rug. Its inner shape is dark charcoal with a pointed arch at the top, and its outline is worked in pale cream scrollwork and small flowers. The lighter outline keeps the shape readable even where the colour has faded.
The field around the medallion is a darker grey-black, with a few lighter patches where the pile has thinned. A cream border with small floral sprigs and a thin inner stripe frames the field on all four sides, so the rug has a clear edge. The border is paler than the field, which lifts this blue vintage Ghadim rug at its edges.
Persian rugs and their weaving
Every rug in this collection is hand knotted in Iran. A Persian rug is made one knot at a time on a loom, usually from hand-spun wool and sometimes silk, and a room-size piece can take a weaver many months. That is why no two are alike. Wool is soft, resilient and easy to live with, which suits a rug that will carry a lot of foot traffic.
How this blue vintage Ghadim rug is made
This blue vintage Ghadim rug is hand double knotted from wool, so each knot is tied by hand and secured around two warp threads. The knotting shows most clearly in the medallion, where the scrolls are drawn in fine detail. Because the colour has faded, the pattern now reads by its shape and its pale outlines rather than by strong contrast.
Sizing it for your room
At 390 x 300 cm, this blue vintage Ghadim rug covers about 11.7 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 85 cm of rug showing past each end, and armchairs can rest their front legs on the rug. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, it leaves roughly 75 cm at each end and about 100 cm along each side. Its charcoal and cream tones suit grey walls, pale timber and white furnishings.
Set against a white sofa, the charcoal field of this blue vintage Ghadim rug gives the room a strong, quiet anchor.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
