Blue Vaziri Sarasar Rug
This blue Vaziri Sarasar rug is made in Afghanistan from lamb wool and measures 306 x 248 cm, or about 7.6 square metres. Its ground is a warm grey, and the blue shows mainly in a few of the medallions, alongside red, green, cream, navy and gold. Six rows of octagonal medallions, four to a row, sit on the grey field, framed by a border with small floral motifs.
The design up close
Across this blue Vaziri Sarasar rug, the medallions sit in a regular grid. Each one is an octagon with a small square at its centre, ringed by stepped shapes and pointed motifs. Their colours change from one to the next, so a red medallion sits beside a cream one, and a green one beside a navy one. Between them, small upright motifs in rust, green and cream fill the grey ground.
The border has several bands. The widest is grey with small floral and leaf motifs in red, cream and green, and narrow stripes run alongside it. A fine fringe finishes the top and bottom ends.
The border runs down both sides and across both ends, so the medallion grid sits evenly inside it. Its grey and cream tones pick up the lightest medallions, so the rug reads as one piece from across the room.
The grey ground keeps the colour in the medallions.
The medallion grid of this blue Vaziri Sarasar rug has six rows of four, so the pattern repeats evenly down the length. On both sides, the outer border carries pairs of stylised motifs in red, cream and green, and the top and foot repeat them.
How Afghan rugs are made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and a room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months. Some use wool that is spun by hand. Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs and a heavier, more relaxed feel, and this blue Vaziri Sarasar rug has the repeated geometric medallions that tradition is known for.
Sizing your blue Vaziri Sarasar rug
At 306 x 248 cm, this blue Vaziri Sarasar rug covers about 7.6 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 43 cm of rug showing past each end, so the whole sofa sits on the grey field. For a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, the rug gives roughly 63 cm at each end and 79 cm along each side. Warm timber floors and cream or white walls suit the grey ground, and red or green cushions pick up the medallions.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
