Blue Tribal Kashmiri Rug
This blue tribal Kashmiri rug was double hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 115 x 76 cm. Its deep navy field carries five tan medallions, with a border of cream and brown geometric bands.
The design up close
Five tan medallions run down the centre of the navy field. Each has a cream centre and a dark outline, and small tan and cream triangles point in from both sides between them. Each medallion is set well inside the field, so the navy ground shows around it on every side.
In this blue tribal Kashmiri rug the pattern is set with wide, even spacing, so the field reads as a clear column from top to bottom.
The border is cream and brown, built from geometric bands in rows. A dark outer edge frames the whole rug, and the cream bands pick up the cream centres of the medallions.
Where Afghan rugs work best
Thick wool and patterned fields hide everyday wear, so Afghan rugs are a good choice for family rooms, entrances, hallways and dining rooms.
Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs, with a heavier, more relaxed feel.
Our Afghan tribal rugs carry this bold style, and this blue tribal Kashmiri rug is one of them. Its patterned field keeps the eye moving across the rug, so the navy ground never looks flat.
How it is made
This blue tribal Kashmiri rug is double hand knotted, so each knot is tied by hand on a loom, one at a time. Our records note natural dyes.
Turn it over and the design shows on the back, with slight irregularities where the knots were tied by hand.
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and this rug follows that method. The pile is tied knot by knot, so the surface feels textured under the hand.
Sizing a blue tribal Kashmiri rug
At 115 x 76 cm the rug covers about 0.9 square metres. It fits a hallway corner, an entrance or the space beside a bed.
A deep navy field looks strong on pale timber, so a blue tribal Kashmiri rug this size can anchor a small room without crowding the furniture.
It is shorter than a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, so it sits best under a coffee table or beside a bed. Put it where people walk past often, such as the route from the front door, so the pattern is seen every day.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
