Blue Tree Of Life Afghan Rug
This blue tree of life Afghan rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan in lamb’s wool and measures 205 x 154 cm, about 3.2 square metres. The ground is teal, a blue-green, and rows of stylised trees in red, cream, orange and purple run across it.
The design up close
Rows of trees cover the whole field. Tall, narrow trees in dark red, cream and purple stand in columns, and rounder flowering trees in terracotta and cream sit between them. Small flowers and leaf shapes in red, orange and cream form narrow bands that divide the field into tiers.
Near the middle, two small red deer-like animals stand on either side of a flowering tree, and smaller animals in red and cream appear among the trees further down. The top and bottom rows repeat small trees and flower heads across the full width, so the design runs to the edges.
The teal ground lets the warm reds and creams of the trees stand out clearly. The colours are strongest at the centre, where the largest trees sit, and the design of this blue tree of life Afghan rug stays busy right to the ends.
Weaving in Afghanistan
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition. Its rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time, and the design is built up row by row. That is how the rows of trees on this blue tree of life Afghan rug are formed, with every motif tied into the pile as the weaver works across the field.
How it is made
This blue tree of life Afghan rug is made of lamb’s wool. Our records note German dyes.
The tree motifs are knotted into the pile the same way across the field, so the rows line up cleanly from one side to the other.
Sizing a blue tree of life Afghan rug for your room
At 205 x 154 cm the rug is about 1.54 m wide, close to the 153 cm width of a queen bed. It can lie at the foot of a queen bed with its 2.05 m length running out into the room. In a living room, the rug suits a sofa of about 2.2 m if the front legs of the sofa rest on it around a coffee table.
This blue tree of life Afghan rug has an area of about 3.2 square metres, so it works in a room with plain walls and timber or pale floors.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
