Blue Traditional Abshari Rug
This blue traditional Abshari rug was hand knotted in Afghanistan from wool and measures 244 x 164 cm. Its sage green field carries two diamond medallions in red and pink, and the rug covers about 4.0 square metres.
The design of this blue traditional Abshari rug up close
Two diamond medallions run down the centre, each with a red outline, pink and cream rings and a small blue core. Light blue stepped shapes sit at each side of the field, and small red squares, blue squares and cream motifs fill the green ground between the medallions. The stepped shapes repeat at each side, so the field feels balanced.
The border is red, with a row of orange and cream rosettes and a thin light blue line inside it. The light blue corner pieces are the coolest colour in the rug, and the green field is the largest area of colour. The red and pink medallions stand out across this blue traditional Abshari rug from end to end.
Afghanistan and its weaving
Afghanistan has a long weaving tradition, and Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. A room-size rug can take a small team of weavers many months. Afghan rugs more often carry bold geometric and tribal designs, and their thick wool and patterned fields hide everyday wear, so they suit family rooms, entrances, hallways and dining rooms. This rug follows that tradition with its geometric medallions. Our Afghan collection ranges from bold tribal designs to calm, contemporary pieces.
How this blue traditional Abshari rug is made
This blue traditional Abshari rug is hand knotted from wool, one knot at a time on a loom. Red and pink tones in a rug of this kind sit well with grey or cream furniture.
Sizing it for your room
At 244 x 164 cm, this blue traditional Abshari rug is about 2.4 m long, which suits a lounge with a coffee table. The front legs of a sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around the table. Set the coffee table between the two medallions so the eye stays on the centre. Its width of 164 cm suits a seating area, where the medallions can be seen from the sofa.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm, it leaves roughly 32 cm of rug at each end and about 37 cm along each side. Its sage green ground suits pale timber floors and white or cream walls.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
