Blue Tabriz Goli Rug
This blue Tabriz Goli rug is a hand knotted Persian rug from Iran, woven in wool and measuring 365 x 260 cm. Its navy field is filled with a fine all-over pattern of small flowers, with a rust red medallion at the centre. The border is a warm rust with cream and blue grey motifs, so the rug suits a room where you want a deep ground with a clear focal point.
The design up close
The navy field is covered with a close, even pattern of small flowers and buds in red, ivory and ochre, with tiny blue grey accents between them. At the centre a rust red medallion with a pale blue grey outline holds the eye, and small red flowers sit at its side points.
The corners hold angled rust spandrels edged in cream and blue grey. The outer border is a wide band in rust red with small cream and blue rosettes, and a purple outer edge and thin guard stripes frame the whole piece.
Tabriz and its weaving
Tabriz, in north-west Iran, has been a centre of rug weaving for centuries, and its workshops are known for fine knotting and an enormous range of designs. Since the mid 19th century, Tabriz weavers have tied the symmetrical (Turkish) knot, often with a small hooked knife, which gives a firm, even surface. Every rug in this collection was hand knotted in Iran, and this blue Tabriz Goli rug is listed with the same origin.
How a blue Tabriz Goli rug is made
Weavers tie each knot by hand on a loom, row after row, then trim the pile level. The back shows the same design with small irregularities from hand knotting. Each small flower in the navy field is formed from its own set of knots, so the pattern is built up slowly, one knot at a time.
Sizing it for your room
At 365 x 260 cm, this blue Tabriz Goli rug covers about 9.5 square metres. This is the same size as a 260 x 365 rug, with the 365 cm side as the length. Under a three-seat sofa of about 2.2 m, the rug runs roughly 73 cm past each end, so the front legs of the sofa and two armchairs can rest on it around a coffee table.
Under a dining table of about 180 x 90 cm for six seats, there is roughly 93 cm of rug at each end and about 85 cm along each side.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum your blue Tabriz Goli rug on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
