Blue Super Kazak Runner
This blue Super Kazak runner was hand double knotted in Afghanistan in wool, with vegetable dyes, and measures 201 x 72 cm. Its deep blue field carries five geometric medallions in red, cream and gold, set in a long central panel and framed by stepped red and cream borders.
The design up close
The five medallions run one above another down the centre. The top and bottom ones are rounded and outlined in gold and cream, with a red centre at the top and a navy star at the bottom. The second and fourth medallions are red diamonds with hooked arms, one above and one below a cream and blue diamond at the centre of the field.
Between the medallions, small red, cream and orange flowers, squares and little hooked crosses fill the blue ground. They are small enough that the blue shows around each one, so the field looks rich and even from end to end. The small motifs echo the shapes of the medallions, so the field feels unified.
The border has a wide band of red and cream stepped triangles along each edge, with diamond panels between them. A narrow cream stripe separates the border from the blue field, which keeps the strong edge from crowding the medallions.
Kazak rugs and their origins
Kazak rugs take their name from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, where weavers made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. Blue is one of those historic colours, and this runner shows how the design sits on a deep blue ground.
In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan have revived these designs. This blue Super Kazak runner is one of our Afghan pieces, woven in wool with vegetable dyes.
How this blue Super Kazak runner is made
Afghan rugs are hand knotted on a loom, one knot at a time. This runner is double knotted, as its title states, and the pile is wool. Our records note vegetable dyes. The blue ground runs evenly from end to end, and the red, cream and gold motifs sit cleanly on it.
Sizing a blue Super Kazak runner for your hallway
At 201 x 72 cm, this blue Super Kazak runner covers about 1.4 square metres. Its width suits a hallway about 92 to 112 cm wide, which leaves 10 to 20 cm of floor on each side.
At this length the runner also suits a kitchen galley, where it runs along the benches, or the floor beside a bed.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
