Blue Super Kazak Rug
This blue Super Kazak rug was hand double knotted in Afghanistan in handspun wool and measures 365 x 268 cm. A mid blue field carries rows of red, cream and rust medallions, inside a broad red border with white and blue geometric motifs. Our records note vegetable dyes.
The design up close
A grid of large star medallions fills the blue field. They sit in staggered columns, with the largest in red and cream outlined in rust. Smaller red and cream rosettes and diamonds fill the spaces between them, and small crosses and dotted motifs run in lines across the ground.
The border is red and wide, with a band of white and blue geometric motifs: diamonds, arrows and triangles set along each edge. Narrow rust and cream guard stripes sit between the border and the field.
The palette is blue, red and cream, with rust in the outlines. The red border carries the warm colour right around this blue Super Kazak rug, and the blue field keeps the whole piece bright.
Kazak rugs and the Caucasus
Kazak rugs revive the bold, geometric designs first woven in the Caucasus. The name comes from the Kazak (Gazakh) district of the southern Caucasus, on the borders of today’s Azerbaijan, Armenia and Georgia.
Weavers there made thick, boldly coloured rugs with large geometric medallions, stars and hooked motifs in deep reds, blues and ivory. In recent decades, weavers in Afghanistan and Pakistan have revived these designs, often in hand-spun wool and natural dyes. This blue Super Kazak rug comes from Afghanistan.
How it is made
Weavers tie every knot of this blue Super Kazak rug by hand on a loom, and the pile is double knotted. The wool is handspun, which gives a soft sheen and a gentle variation in the yarn that machine-spun wool does not have. A good Kazak has a dense pile and feels heavy for its size, which is why it wears so well.
Sizing your blue Super Kazak rug
At 365 x 268 cm this blue Super Kazak rug covers about 9.8 square metres. A three-seat sofa of around 2.2 m leaves about 72 cm of rug showing past each end. Under a dining table of about 240 x 100 cm, the rug shows roughly 62 cm at each end and 84 cm along each side. The blue ground suits cream walls and timber floors, and the red border adds warmth to grey or neutral furnishings. Its warm colours sit well with timber floors and with both traditional and modern furniture.
Looking after your rug
Vacuum it on a suction-only setting, or with the beater bar switched off, so the brush does not pull at the knots. Turn it around every six to twelve months so sun and foot traffic wear it evenly. Blot spills with a clean white cloth and cold water rather than rubbing them in. When it needs a full clean, choose a cleaner who washes handmade rugs by hand.
Put a good underlay beneath it. It stops the rug sliding on timber or tiles, adds cushioning and takes some of the wear off the pile. Moths like wool in dark, quiet spots, such as the part of a rug under a sofa, so vacuum those areas often and lift the furniture now and then.
